Topacon was begun as an opportunity for college friends to meet and play games as they did back in the good ol' days. Our solution to changes in addresses was to agree to meet once a year and relive the experiences and make new memories with some new games. As an extension of this, we have met new friends who have moved into the area and continued the tradition.
Our first conventions had the common problem of location. They were held in large apartment houses and word of mouth was the only advertising. We agreed to jointly pay for a better location and put some flyers up to invite the local gamers. This has led to support from local businesses and our current location downstairs in Bookery Fantasy.
We have had 12-hour miniature marathons (Star Wars and Battletech), three-part roleplaying sessions lasting all day, crazy card and board games (Munchkin is a favorite) and even an occassional live action game. We offer various types of games all day and invite players to share their favorite games with us.
TopaCon's greatest success lies in the memories and friendships the games have created. Ask a "regular" how the chalk tasted, or the sound a Jedi makes when he gets stepped on by a 12 foot lizard. This will produce fits of laughter and an amusing story if you have the time.
This is our 13th (!) year and we are continuing our "theme" year. Last year was the year the Dragon with games in card, miniature, board and RPGs. This year is all about the Thievous mind of Topa and his Minions! Come try your best to steal the show in every game!!!
See you there! |
